From a deep and foggy sleep, life began its awakening and slowly gave rise to its place in the visual world. In the quiet stillness before the sun rises, you can hear the silence.
Life: breezy mornings, hot noons and even hotter after... When night comes and
darkness envelops our world with her cooling cloak, not only do the crickets sing but also the troubadours and the teenagers chatter alongside the gossipy mothers and squealing toddlers. The dogs lie still, exasperated or oblivious, patiently waiting for the night to be quiet again.
"Love, whether newly born or aroused from a deathlike slumber, must always create sunshine, filling the heart so full of radiance, that it overflows upon the outward world."
"Photographs, whether newly made or rising from the hulls of history, must always create an emotion, stirring the viewer so that the image remains firmly in the heart or mind, even after the photo is physically removed."
Stephanie Duprie Routh
“I am not a great cook. I am not a great artist, but I love art, and I love food, so I am the perfect traveller.”
In this portfolio, images of markets and street food come together as a feast for the viewer.
What we know informs who we are. Do we all wear cowboy boots or sandals or sombreros or turbans? Do we all eat barbecue or corn or madras soup or menudo? Maybe yes. Maybe no. But -- we all eat and breathe. We are the same and different.
"You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who'll decide where to go..."--Dr. Seuss
A sense of place: Where is our place? Where is your place? This is my place. My place is filled with the same things as your place. Life. Death. Dreams. Foggy memories and aging beauty. Inviting isolation and inviting socialization. Food--for sustenance, for meaning, for surviving more than the day. The clean, crisp breeze that blows through my window also opens yours. The clothes on the line don’t air my dirty laundry. Instead, my soul is refreshed with the smells of fresh cut grass and sunshine and the colors of the world that can only be felt, not seen. Welcome to your place.
