Taken during a ten-day trip up the Nile River in Egypt, these images document life along the water from Luxor to Aswan. Traveling on a “dahabeya” or traditional tug boat, Duprie Routh photographed the actions of the boat’s small crew, workers procuring wood along the shore, the effects of industrial sugar production, and children at play. Shooting intuitively, she captures intimate moments of sailing, farming, and fishing along bodies of water around the world.
Food Shelter Water: Projects by Four Texas Photographers, The Art Galleries (TAG) at Austin Community College
Artist Talk
Food Shelter Water featured the work of four Texas-based photographers who address themes related to our most basic human needs. Barriers to these resources reflect the baseline issues surrounding social justice and equity within American society and around the world. From Egypt, Latin America, Texas, and Austin, the images presented bring new light to the diverse and intersecting ways we interact with our social and physical environments. Even when displaced or put under pressure, we share a common familiarity in how we enjoy a meal in the company of loved ones, desire living in safe and secure communities, or feel the thrill of jumping into water on a hot day.
This exhibition is a collaboration between The Art Galleries (TAG) at Austin Community College and ACC’s Department of Professional Photography (The DPP).
